The Courtyard

Borgopetra's lava-stone doors and windows face onto the terracotta paved courtyard, the "open heart" of the house. A collection of cactus and succulents live among the centuries-old oleanders while summer evenings are scented by the jasmine. The two roof terraces look across at Etna to the north and, to the south over the rooftops of old Mascalucia to Catania and the sea.
